Spirit
“We cannot know the consequences of suppressing a child’s spontaneity when he is just beginning to be active. We may even suffocate life itself. That humanity which is revealed in all its intellectual splendour during the sweet and tender age of childhood should be respected with a kind of religious veneration. It is like the sun which appears at dawn or a flower just beginning to bloom.” (Maria Montessori, from The Discovery of the Child, 1912)
For some of my clients, religion or spirituality is an essential aspect of life. I am always keen to incorporate this extremely important dimension of a person’s life into the counselling process. If these issues are not important to someone, that’s fine – we might talk instead about their fundamental values and principles. I always work with what a client brings to the session. Learning about the different world views that people have is one of the great privileges of working as a counsellor. My aim is always to understand each person and their unique perspective as well as I can.
