What is counselling?
Counselling is the name given to a process in which a person sees a trained professional to talk in confidence about their feelings, thoughts and problems with a view to feeling better and happier in their life. This positive change often results from gaining greater self-understanding, insight and awareness through meaningful conversations with someone who is there to listen, without judgement, in an atmosphere of genuineness, acceptance and respect. More intensive work on a deeper level is sometimes referred to as psychotherapy.
We all need someone to talk to at times in our lives when things get on top of us. Although friends and family can help much of the time, sometimes it’s useful to speak with an impartial person who isn’t involved with us in daily life. With so many people relocating in today’s world the circumstances of people’s lives can change suddenly, leaving them isolated from support they once relied upon and counselling can often help at times like this. There is also a myth that counselling is only for when you have a very stressful or difficult problem when in fact it can offer a precious opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth at any time in a person’s life.
